Community-Based, Sustainable Urban Design
Our approach to community-based, sustainable urban design includes:
Collaborative design that involves community input (see community engagement section below).
Local place-placed design that honors local heritage and provides a sense of place-based community and identity. It honors the local landscape by using local flora and water harvesting systems.
Sustainable design that fosters health and wellbeing by using eco-friendly materials and prioritizing accessibility, mobility, pedestrian safety, and noise reduction.
Community-oriented, Sustainable Businesses
Our approach to community-oriented, sustainable businesses includes:
Assessing and filling business vacancies on State Street through funding and business accelerator opportunities.
Selecting and supporting businesses that value sustainability and community through facilitating their transition into our city core on State Street.
Increasing revenue and potential value of all businesses on State Street, in Santa Barbara, and beyond by having community-oriented, sustainable businesses on State Street.
Community Engagement
Our approach to community engagement includes:
Collaborative Design Roundtables: engaging community members in the design and development process through transparent, democratic, open-design sessions to generate design proposals for State Street, in Santa Barbara, and beyond.
For example, hosting collaborative design roundtables to collect community ideas, input, innovations, and imaginations.
For example, empowering youth through the design process that addresses climate anxiety and learning how to take part in the solution
Community Building Events: building community on State Street through hosting different types of events that showcase sustainability, wellness, and/or art.
Network Hub: linking people and organizations on a project basis for shared goals related to community-based, sustainable urban design.
Eco-Friendly Materials
Our approach to eco-friendly materials includes:
Researching and sharing about the use of existing eco-friendly materials and their place on State Street, in Santa Barbara, and beyond.
Prioritizing eco-friendly materials that are non-toxic, carbon-neutral/carbon-negative, sustainably harvested, and locally sourced when possible.
Rethinking the future design of State Street (Santa Barbara’s city core) in a way that benefits the community for decades to come where they can not only spend their money, but their time.
